Install Your Own Roof Insulation if you install your own
Roof insulation, you can purchase roof insulation in various designs and thicknesses and accessories, such as supports for installing floorboards, at a large hardware store. You can buy it. Other types, such as Eco and Multi foil insulation, are available online.
What you need
1. Insulation
Once you have decided on insulation, consider how much you need. Note that the loft insulation roll width is usually 1140mm, as the distance between joists in most houses is usually 400mm or 600mm. Most insulation rolls are perforated, so you can easily cut them in half or thirds depending on your space.
2. Snap-off knife or panel saw
Insulation or panels should be cut precisely to the dimensions of the joists.
3. Crawl boards
If you want to use the space for storage, you can buy floor panels or crawl boards at most hardware stores.
4. Storage stanchions
If you use a clipboard and want to maintain a 50mm ventilation gap to ensure good airflow and avoid moisture, you can add these stanchions.
Protective equipment – goggles, masks and gloves are suitable for this job.
5. Staple Guns
The area of insulation covering the loft hatch should be kept safe and tidy by wrapping it in one of the plastic wraps containing the insulation or in a plastic carry bag. I can. Just secure it with a staple gun or big-headed thumbtack.
Loft Insulation Installation Method
If the loft joists are standard, insulation rolls can be used.
- Place the first layer between the joists, the horizontal joists that make up the loft floor.

3. Install the support (if you need to raise the board).
First, attach the supports to the ceiling joists.
Install them at a distance of about 1m.
4. Install the floor panel
- a) Place the first shingle over the joists.
- b) Make sure the edges of the board stay on the joists. If this is the case, trim it to go only to the midpoint of the joist so that the next board can be securely attached to the joist.
- c) Use approximately 2-3 screws per connection.
- d) Lay another roof shingle. Lay them in a staggered, brick-like pattern to strengthen and stabilize the planked area.
- e) Always check those tongue-and-groove connections are correctly installed.
5. Add a fill if desired.
Continuing the staggered pattern inevitably leaves some gaps in the trimming. However, these gaps can be filled with filler pieces that can be cut off into small pieces.
